Troy’s comment to my Gonzo Journalism article caused me to remember a book I read years ago, entitled “Invisible Government.” I couldn’t recall the author or even how long ago it had been written, so I googled it. It produced two extraordinary documents that I just had to share here.

The first, is in the CIA’s own library! Since the 1964 book posited that there was a segment of the CIA running amuck, without adult supervision, they naturally reviewed it in a confidential memo. It was declassified in 1995, and begins:

CONFIDENTIAL

THE INVISIBLE GOVERNMENT. By David Wise and Thomas B. Ross. (New York: Random. 1964. 375 pp. $5.95.)

The journalist-authors of this best-seller admit that Communist subversion and espionage pose a unique threat to the American people and their government, and they accept the necessity under certain circumstances for secret American efforts to prevent Moscow and Peking from gaining new allegiances. But they profess to believe that our secret attempts to meet the Communist challenge constitute so real a threat to our own freedoms that they must be exposed in as detailed and dramatic a way as possible. If the Soviets are profiting from these revelations, as they are, -Vise and Ross apparently think that such self-inflicted wounds must be endured in the battle against excessive secrecy.

Broadly stated, their thesis is that the U.S. intelligence community, with the CIA at its heart, has grown so big and powerful that it threatens the democracy it was designed to defend. The CIA, they say, conducts its own clandestine foreign policy, and even the President – has been unable to control it. The State Department is powerless to exert policy direction because its ambassadors are kept uninformed and are habitually by-passed by CIA operatives. The Congress has abdicated its legislative role and votes huge secret funds without adequate knowledge of how the money is spent.

If all this were true, American democracy would certainly be in serious trouble, and the alarm professed about the “invisible government” would be justified. But is it true?…

It is short, read the whole thing.

Since I had read that book 45 years ago, probably the more interesting find to me, was another short article written in 2002 during the run up to the Iraq War, by Henry Makow, Ph.D. entitled, “Lifting The Curtain On The Invisible Government: The Charade Of Democracy.” It begins with an extraordinary quote:

In 1913, Congressman Charles Lindbergh said: “When the President signs this bill; the invisible government by the Monetary Power will be legalized. The day of reckoning is only a few years removed.”

Lindbergh, of course, is referring to the Federal Reserve Act, and it is a keeper for a guy who often refers to 1913 as the worst year in our nation’s history. Does anyone doubt that that day of reckoning is decidedly upon us? I’ll not spoil a great “must read” by copying too much of it here; but there was one stunning revelation that I had never heard of, which should whet your appetite:

Dall relates a less known but more telling anecdote. In 1956, George Earle, a former governor of Pennsylvania, told him that in 1943 the Nazis tried to surrender. At the time, Earle was Naval Attaché in Istanbul when Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, head of the German Secret Service, approached him personally. Canaris told him that the German generals felt Hitler was leading Germany to destruction. They could not accept Roosevelt’s policy of “unconditional surrender,” but if FDR would offer “honourable surrender,” the army was prepared to stage a coup d’etat. They believed that Russia represented a threat to Western Civilization and they were ready to present a non-Nazi German bulwark against Communist designs in Eastern Europe.

To make a long story short, FDR repeatedly ignored this proposal which could have ended the war in 1943 and saved millions of lives. Canaris and hundreds of other decent German officers were tortured and killed by the Gestapo. The bankers’ policy, as exhibited by the fire bombing of German cities, was clearly to 1) prolong the war and inflict maximum damage on Germany, 2) ensure that Soviet Russia occupy Eastern Europe and become a major world power.

Wow! Is there any wonder that we are all such befuddled pathetic sheeple, trying to make sense of geopolitics from our myopic worldview, beclouded by nonstop circuses and cake? How many truly believe that replacing the Obamunist with the likes of Romney or Perry is going to make much difference in the big picture trajectory of history? I would suggest that we are wasting our time thumping our long impotent Constitution. It is very nearly time to dust off the Declaration of Independence, lace up our boots, and call muster… â—„Daveâ–º
